Emilio Teubal was born in Madrid, Spain in 1976. At that time, his parents where exile from the dictatorship government in Argentina. After a short period in Spain , and one year in England, the whole family moved to Mexico City where they spent five years. In 1984, with the return of the democracy, his family decided to go back to Argentina. Once in Buenos Aires, Emilio started playing the piano at the age of nine. He studied piano at the National Conservatory of Buenos Aires, and composition, arranging, and orchestration with private teachers. He was a very active performer in the tango and jazz scene of Buenos Aires until 1999, when he moved to New York City to continue his musical studies.
In the United States, Emilio earned a BFA in Music from the City College of New York, graduating magna cum laude, and achieved the Zolot Award, recognizing him one of the most talented graduating students. He also received the Bushwick Composition Award for two consecutive years. At CCNY his teachers included prominent jazz figures such as Marc Copland, Scott Reeves, Bruce Barth, Mike Holober, John Pattitucci, Cliff Korman and Alison Dean.
His credits as a jazz and tango pianist include performances with artists like Bob Mover, Jhon Benitez, Daniel Binelli, Hector del Curto, Oscar Feldman, Yosvany Terry, Fernando Huergo, Raul Jaurena, Pancho Navarro, Tito Castro, and Lucia Pulido among others. He has perfomed in the LA Tango production el corazon del tango with the Lisandro Adrover quintet (feauturing violinist Miguel Bertero). He has performed in several prestigious jazz clubs in NYC such us Birdland, Sweet Rhythm, Dizzy's Coca Cola Club, Cornelia Street Cafe and The Knitting Factory. He has also been a steady member of different New York based music groups like the Marta Gomez Group, Sebastian Cruz's Coba, and Los Chantas Tango Group, with whom he has performed in some of the most important tango festivals in the New York Tri-State area.
Emilio's main activities as composer involve La Balteuband, his own Argentine Jazz group, which has performed in some of the most prestigious avant-garde and jazz venues in New York City, among them Cornelia Street Cafe,the Knitting Factory, Makor, Galapagos Art Space, Bowery Poetry Club, Nublu, and others. La Balteuband has released Its first album in December 2006.
Emilio Teubal is a recipient of Meet The Composer's 2007 Van Lier Fellowship.
Emilio has also written music for animated films of the video artist Dalia Fishbein such as Pendulous Set (2004), Begining (2005), and Net (2006). These works have been showed in several film festivals along the United States, Grece, and Argentina.
As a big band composer/ arranger Mr Teubal has written for the prestigious Westchester Jazz Orchestra, with figures like Ralph Lalama, Ted Rosenthal, and Marvin Steam. He has also arranged for the CCNY Big Band.
